Healthy Spaniel

Spaniels are very Active Dogs.
If you do not give them enough exercise they will rapidly get bored
and one of the things they love to do is eat.
So they will spend much of their time pestering you for food.
You can counter this by giving them lots more exercise or by cutting down the number of treats they get.
Switch to healthy treats such as dried trip (yes I know it smells foul to us but lovely to dogs).
Check your dogs health daily with these simple rules

The eyes - are they healthy shining and bright or dull and bloodshot.
Feel your puppys coat is it harsh and staring - it should be soft and glossy.
Check between the paws for burrs and caked mud.
Check the genital area for swelling or discharge.
Check the ears for excess wax or burrs or other seed pods.

You should also check your dogs solid waste for signs of worms.
All puppys have worms as a matter of course and these should be treated with a deworming remedy regularly.

It is up to you to feed your pet healthy food but one of the reasons that dogs originally tagged on to humans is the delicious food we eat - and the dogs want some too. A few scraps are usually not harmful
and makes your Spaniel feel included in the family.

Choose good all in one food such as Kibble (there are several brands available of healthy kibble).
The main thing to avoid is Chocolate - this can easily kill your pet as it sends them hyperactive
and has other unpleasant side effects.

Try to give your dog a diet that includes all the vitamins and minerals they need.
Cheaper dog foods often include cereals to bulk them out and all those parts of animals that we would never consider eating.

I have even found a horses hoof in a can of well known (expensive) dog food.

Ask your vet which is the best food for your dog. Remember that puppies need different food from adult dogs.
Bored dogs do get obese quite quickly and this can lead to diabetes and heart complaints so diet really is important.
Do not overfeed your Spaniel or you will cut its life expectancy drastically.

It is vital to vaccinate your dog against infectious diseases like Kennel Cough and Distemper.
A single shot only lasts a year and must be followed with annual booster shots.
These diseases really are killers and shots are a must if your dog goes to any spot popular with dog walkers.
My own dogs have in the past caught kennel cough while in a registered Boarding Kennel.
Even the best run kennels may have unknowingly accepted infected dogs as guests.
Protect your dog properly.
